  67. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  70. 1.  486sx/33 - minium configuration, although:
  71.   - it should work on a 486sx/25 and maybe even a fast 386 with reduced
  72.     sound quality.
  73.   - on a Pentium (and if the calling party also has a Pentium), you will
  74.     experience improved sound quality.
  75.  
  76. 2.  Windows 3.1, 3.11, Windows for Worgroups 3.11, or Windows 95
  77.  
  78. 3.  Sound Card (8 bit or 16 bit)
  79.   - Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 preferred.  It will operate in full duplex
  80.     with these cards.
  81.   - For other sound cards, it will operate in either full-duplex or
  82.     half-duplex depending on the card & driver.
  83.  
  84. 4.  Microphone & Speakers -- these plug into your Sound Card
  85.  
  86. 5.  Internet Service Provider (ISP) connection
  87.   - usually, this is a dial-up PPP or SLIP connection available from
  88.     most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for $20 to $30 per month.
  89.   - 14,400 baud dial-up connection (minimum)

  91.   - alternatives include:  ISDN, Frame Relay, T1, etc.

  104. RUNNING OTHER APPLICATIONS IN THE BACKGROUND
  105. ============================================
  106.  
  107. As a real-time application, FreeTel is very demanding of the CPU.  On
  108. slow machines, FreeTel will require most of the attention of the CPU.
  109. For best performance, it is recommended that you do not run other
  110. applications while you are maintaining a FreeTel conversation.  If you
  111. do, and particularly on slower machines, it can cause "dropouts" or
  112. "choppiness" in your conversations.  Under extreme conditions, for
  113. example during the loading of a large application, when Windows does
  114. not permit other applications to task-switch, you can even lose your
  115. connection.  If you plan on starting another application, it is a good
  116. idea to let the other party know, since he may not be able to hear you
  117. for the few seconds while the application is starting (and your hard
  118. drive is churning away).

  121. UNIX HOST ACCOUNTS TO SIMULATE PPP/SLIP  (TIA, SLIRP)
  122. =====================================================
  123.  
  124. * If you are using a UNIX host account instead of PPP/SLIP and you are
  125.   using a package such as TIA from CyberSpace to simulate a PPP/SLIP
  126.   connection, note the following:
  127.  
  128.   - If you are using TIA from CyberSpace Development, Inc., make sure
  129.     you are using a recent version.  FreeTel works with version 2.05 but
  130.     not with 1.04c
  131.  
  132.   - FreeTel also works with version 1.0c of SLIRP.
  133.  
  134.  
  135. FULL-DUPLEX SOUND BLASTER 16 DRIVERS
  136. ====================================
  137.  
  138. This section describes some options that you have available if you are
  139. using a Sound Blaster 16, Sound Blaster AWE32 or 100% compatible audio
  140. cards.
  141.  
  142. * For best quality and performance, we recommend that you use the
  143.   FreeTel _internal_ full-duplex Sound Blaster 16 driver.
  144.  
  145. * If you are using the special beta Windows 3.x full-duplex driver
  146.   version 3.50 downloaded from the Creative Labs Web site, we recommend
  147.   that you do not use it as it has some problems.  Same goes for
  148.   version 3.51.
  149.  
  150. * The Windows 95 Creative Labs full-duplex driver version 4.25 seems to
  151.   work fine, although it will not achieve as good performance as
  152.   the internal driver.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. CURRENT BUGS
  156. ============
  157.  
  158. The following are some current problems.
  159.  
  160. * Windows 95 with Sound Blaster 16 Cards
  161.  
  162.   FreeTel provides full-duplex support for the SoundBlaster 16, Sound
  163.   Blaster AWE32, and 100% compaitble sound boards.  It contains a
  164.   special internal driver to accomplish this.
  165.  
  166.   The behaviour of this internal driver is different under Windows 3.x
  167.   versus Windows 95.
  168.  
  169.   Under Windows 3.x, the internal full-duplex driver seamlessly integrates
  170.   with the regular audio wave support.  You can switch back and forth
  171.   between FreeTel and other audio software at will.
  172.  
  173.   Under Windows 95, however, the internal full-duplex driver disables
  174.   the standard Wave audio support, and thus disables sound under
  175.   Windows 95 (other than FreeTel).
  176.  
  177.   For more information, refer to the online HELP or our Web page.
  178.  
  179. * The Media Vision ProAudio Spectrum audio card software does not
  180.   interface to the MS mixer API properly.  As a result, you can't change
  181.   the microphone volume from within FreeTel.  You must change the
  182.   mic volume by using the ProAudio mixer.
  183.  
  184.   Also, some versions of the ProAudio mixer do not permit you to
  185.   disable the microphone to speaker feedthrough.  We are not aware
  186.   of any workarounds for this.
  187.  
  188. * The Monte Carlo audio card by Turtle Beach exhibits occassional 
  189.   problems with FreeTel.
  190.  
  191. * Under Windows 95, the "Minimize All" toolbar option crashes the system.
  192.   (The regular minimize function works fine, however.)
  193.  
  194. * The ACE 5000 Sound card does not work with FreeTel.
  195.  
  196.  
  197. OTHER COMMENTS:

  200. * The Sound Blaster Pro audio card can only operate in half-duplex mode.
  201.   It is different from the Sound Blaster 16 which can operate in
  202.   full-duplex mode with our internal audio driver.

  207. NEW FEATURES FOR VERSION 0.91 BETA

  210. * you can now manually override the voice (VOX) activation by pressing
  211.   and holding the CONTROL key.  You can use this to interrupt the
  212.   other party if you have a half-duplex card.  See help for details.

  214. * The new exclusive "Booster" feature enables you to reduce "dropouts"
  215.   and "choppiness", when the Internet or ISP is overloaded, at the
  216.   cost of increased delay.  See help for details.
